A NEW PARADIGM

We support the transformation of industrial models towards the circular economy paradigm, in which waste is reduced and the useful life of raw materials is extended. To this end, we call on our expertise in waste and sustainability solutions to accompany companies throughout the entire change process, from identifying needs and setting out a roadmap, to executing and rolling out specific solutions.

Gasification

We have teamed up with Sumitomo FW to develop a waste gasification technology with a view to producing a high-purity synthesis gas. The result will open up a huge range of end-product possibilities for our clients, such as e-fuels or methanol. In this way, we are playing our part in reducing the environmental impact of waste, since we reintroduce it into the production chain as a value-added product.

The gasification we put forward is classified as one of the options for converting waste that currently cannot be treated, thereby avoiding landfill or energy recovery, and contributing to an increase in reuse rates and a reduction in raw material consumption.

Pyrolysis

Another of our proposals is based on the pyrolysis process, by which we offer a new solution to the current issue of plastic waste. We will generate a pyrolysis oil with a high conversion rate from the solid waste, working at lower temperatures than in gasification processes. This solution is compact, modular and suitable for the decentralized treatment of plastic waste, contributes to a circular economy and has a positive local impact.

The high-quality pyrolysis oil obtained can be put back into the production chain, so that the final products generated contain a high percentage of reused product, reducing the consumption of raw materials and the emission of greenhouse gases.

Biogases

We have participated in projects geared towards energy recovery of biogas generated by sludge recovery. Examples of this are the plants in Juneda (Lérida) and Polán (Toledo), which Sener owned. Trailblazing projects in which we managed to solve the issue of sludge management, supported the circular economy and fostered a local and decentralized solution.

Waste management by biodigestion allows the treated biomethane to be injected directly into the natural gas grid. In this way, we play our part in the decarbonization of all users who consume from the network where this biogas is injected.

The need for waste management and reuse is on the rise. So, at Sener we continue to provide solutions that decarbonize existing infrastructures by using the renewable gases generated.

Municipal solid waste

We have also participated in developing and fostering several waste treatment plants through energy recovery. For this purpose, we have developed and patented high-efficiency steam cycles with proven robustness in energy recovery from municipal solid waste (MSW).

In this application, the thermodynamic cycles called SENER-2 and SENER-4 with high-pressure steam and low temperature, regenerative and with two pressure stages, high (superheated steam) and low (saturated steam) in two-body steam turbines are used. These cycles are able to overcome the traditional technical and economic disadvantages of MSW treatment. An example of the success of this technology is the Zabalgarbi plant, which came into operation in 2001, has been treating waste from several municipalities in Vizcaya ever since.

We also develop decentralized solutions to treat MSW from modular plants with reduced visual impact and capacity to treat waste in smaller plants where required.

The benefits of our solutions focus on increasing the overall plant performance while increasing plant availability by reducing downtime.
