Why is it necessary?

The province of Catalonia has a great challenge ahead: according to the Catalan Climate Change Law, in 2030 it must reach a renewable energy share of 50%, and 100% in 2050.

It is currently way off meeting these targets, as it is more than 15 points below the Spanish and European average. To achieve this, it must develop a diversified energy mix, where offshore wind must play an important role.

Parc Tramuntana is a floating offshore wind energy project designed to meet the challenge of climate change in the Empordà region. It fosters energy, environmental and economic sustainability in Catalonia.

Characterisitics

It will cover 45% of the current electricity demand of the entire province of Girona.

Capacity of 500 MW.

It will avoid the emission of up to 16 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere,

emissions over its useful life (30 years).

6,000 jobs during the construction phase and 200 direct jobs during the operation and maintenance phase.

It will be an economic driver for the Empordà, generating direct and indirect jobs during the construction, operation and maintenance of the park.

Located outside protected natural areas and respectful of fishing and nautical activity.

35 wind turbines of 15MW.

Benefits of offshore wind:

It is a renewable, unlimited and clean source of energy.

The existing wind resource in the sea is high and of good quality, producing energy throughout the day.

The high wind speed at sea and the economy of scale make it possible to install large turbines and, consequently, improve the performance of the wind farms.

The facilities are close to consumption areas.

The visual and acoustic impact is reduced due to the high distances to the coast.
