By designing infrastructures that transform waste into energy and new raw materials, we reduce environmental impact while generating economic opportunities. Our multidisciplinary teams apply innovative thermodynamic cycles, advanced gasification, and pyrolysis to create scalable solutions that close resource loops and ensure sustainable resource management.
We deliver innovation that redefines waste management efficiency
Our patented cycles, SENER-2 and SENER-4, operate under high pressure and low temperature to overcome the limitations of conventional incineration. This innovation not only increases energy recovery but also minimises pollutant formation. By embedding these advanced processes into waste-to-energy solutions, we provide facilities that are efficient, reliable, and environmentally responsible.
Sener has pioneered reference projects that illustrate our ability to turn circular economy principles into operational infrastructures. At Zabalgarbi (Bizkaia, Spain), we co-developed and delivered a waste-to-energy plant using our proprietary SENER-2 cycle, processing over 225,000 tonnes of municipal waste annually from more than 100 municipalities. The facility generates 650–700 GWh/year, supplying electricity to over one million people, while achieving a net efficiency of 42% compared to ~23% in conventional plants. It also avoids more than 440,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year, proving that sustainability and energy performance can go hand in hand.
Our methodology begins with an assessment of waste streams, resource availability, and local needs. In design, we develop solutions ranging from large-scale plants to modular, decentralised facilities for communities where large complexes are not feasible. Implementation covers EPC delivery of waste treatment lines, thermodynamic cycles, gasification, and pyrolysis systems. Finally, operation includes monitoring and optimisation of performance, ensuring compliance with strict environmental standards and alignment with circular economy goals.
Our approach ensures that infrastructures adapt to changing waste compositions, energy markets, and regulatory frameworks. From converting plastic into high-quality pyrolysis oil to producing syngas for e-fuels, we enable industries and municipalities to treat waste not as a liability but as a renewable resource. This flexibility guarantees long-term relevance and resilience of our sustainable resource management projects.
With projects like Zabalgarbi and collaborations such as our partnership with Sumitomo FW on waste gasification for high-purity syngas, Sener has become a leader in applying circular economy principles to real infrastructures.
We deliver waste-to-energy solutions and recycling facilities that combine high efficiency with measurable climate benefits.
