Thermal Generation

Enabling cleaner heat and power through fuel flexibility

Modernizing thermal power with hydrogen-ready solutions

Thermal generation continues to play a central role in ensuring baseload energy and reliable district heating. Sener is present globally, with projects ranging from Spain’s regasification terminals to Germany’s hydrogen-ready CCGT plants. At Sener, we focus on modernizing these assets to align with the global energy transition. By replacing coal plants with hydrogen-ready gas turbine stations, we help reduce emissions while guaranteeing security of supply. Our projects in Germany with EnBW show how thermal generation can evolve into a clean, flexible backbone for Europe’s low-carbon future.

Streamlined solutions for modern thermal plant services

We deliver services that cover the full lifecycle of thermal plants: from feasibility studies and conceptual design to EPC execution, operation, and maintenance.

We engineer today’s thermal plants for tomorrow’s energy mix

Our portfolio includes combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT), co-generation plants, and hydrogen-ready retrofits. These solutions enable clients to reduce CO₂ emissions today and prepare their assets for green hydrogen in the coming decades.

Why choose us

Sener has decades of expertise in complex power infrastructure. In Germany, we are working with EnBW, General Electric, and Bonatti to replace two coal-fired power plants with 1.4 GW hydrogen-ready CCGT plants at the Heilbronn and Altbach/Deizisau sites. These facilities will initially run on natural gas and will progressively be adapted to burn 100% hydrogen from the 2030s, helping EnBW reach its climate neutrality target by 2035. Beyond design and construction, the contracts also include long-term servicing and maintenance, securing reliable operation for years to come.

Our approach ensures flexibility from day one. By designing CHP (combined heat and power) functionality, plants can deliver both electricity and heat to surrounding communities, increasing overall efficiency. This makes thermal generation not only a provider of power but also a driver of sustainable district heating. The German projects demonstrate our capacity to deliver high-efficiency systems that can transition fuels while continuing to provide essential services.

How we work

We apply an end-to-end methodology:

Assessment:

Studying existing coal infrastructure, demand for power and heat, fuel availability, and regulatory requirements.

Design:

Selecting gas turbine technologies, modelling output, and planning for hydrogen readiness.

Execution:

Delivering EPC contracts, preparing sites, installing turbines, heat recovery systems, and emissions controls.

Operation:

Providing O&M services that ensure reliability, monitor efficiency, and prepare assets for fuel transitions.

This structured process ensures technical robustness and regulatory compliance while preparing assets for future decarbonisation.

We deliver reliability, flexibility, and sustainability over lifecycle

By embedding hydrogen-ready technology, robust maintenance strategies, and CHP capability, our plants adapt to evolving conditions. Operators can reduce CO₂ emissions now and progressively shift to renewable gases. Clients benefit from lower lifecycle costs, higher availability, and alignment with national and European decarbonisation targets.

Delivering thermal projects across energy markets

Our multidisciplinary engineering and EPC delivery ensure that each project meets local demands while aligning with long-term sustainability goals. By replacing coal with flexible gas and hydrogen solutions, we demonstrate how thermal generation remains a cornerstone of secure and sustainable power.

At Sener, we modernize thermal generation with hydrogen-ready, flexible solutions that cut emissions, secure supply, and support the transition to a low-carbon energy mix.
