We drive cleaner and more efficient energy through fuel flexibility
Thermal generation continues to play a key role in ensuring a reliable base energy supply and district heating systems. At Sener, we have a global presence, with projects ranging from regasification terminals in Spain to hydrogen-ready combined cycle plants in Germany. Our goal is to modernize these infrastructures to align with the global energy transition. By replacing coal-fired plants with gas turbine facilities compatible with hydrogen, we help reduce emissions without compromising supply security. Our projects in Germany demonstrate how thermal generation can be transformed into a clean and flexible pillar for Europe’s decarbonized future.
Our portfolio includes combined cycle (CCGT) plants, cogeneration plants, and modernizations ready to operate with hydrogen. These solutions allow our clients to reduce CO₂ emissions from day one and adapt their assets for the use of green hydrogen in the coming decades.
Sener has decades of experience in complex energy infrastructures. In Germany, we are working with EnBW, General Electric, and Bonatti on the replacement of two coal-fired plants with 1.4 GW combined cycle plants, already prepared to run on hydrogen, at the Heilbronn and Altbach/Deizisau sites. These facilities will initially operate on natural gas and progressively transition to 100% hydrogen use starting in the 2030s, contributing to EnBW’s goal of climate neutrality by 2035.
Beyond design and construction, the contracts also include long-term maintenance services, ensuring reliable operation for years to come.
Our approach ensures maximum flexibility from the start. By integrating cogeneration (CHP) functionality, the plants can simultaneously supply electricity and heat to nearby communities, thereby increasing the system’s overall efficiency. In this way, thermal generation not only provides energy but also supports sustainable district heating. The projects in Germany demonstrate our ability to deliver highly efficient systems capable of adapting to new fuels while continuing to provide essential services.
Our specialized teams support clients throughout all phases of the project: from strategic planning and permitting to complete technical design, implementation, and ongoing operational management. We apply an adaptable and modular methodology that incorporates various technologies. This allows us to customize each facility to meet its specific regulatory, territorial, and economic needs.
Our multidisciplinary approach in engineering and EPC execution ensures that each project meets local needs while aligning with long-term sustainability goals. By replacing coal with flexible solutions based on gas and hydrogen, we demonstrate that thermal generation remains a key pillar for a secure and sustainable energy supply.
At Sener, we modernize thermal generation with flexible solutions that guarantee energy supply and support the transition toward a sustainable energy mix.
